The New BECE Rules Every Candidate Must Know

The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is one of the most important exams for students in Ghana. It determines which senior high school a student can attend and can influence future educational and career opportunities. Because of its significance, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Ministry of Education, and the government of Ghana work together to ensure that the examination is conducted fairly, securely, and transparently. Every candidate must understand and follow the rules to avoid penalties, protect their results, and focus on performing their best.

Here are the key points every candidate should know:

1. Restricted Items in the Exam Hall:
   • Mobile phones, smartwatches, earphones, and other electronic devices are strictly prohibited. If a candidate is found with any of these, their results may be withheld pending investigation.
   • Unauthorized printed materials, such as notes, crib sheets, textbooks, or blank papers not permitted by WAEC, are not allowed.
   • Programmable calculators or devices capable of storing data are usually disallowed unless WAEC specifically permits them.
   • These restrictions ensure a level playing field for all candidates and maintain the integrity of the exam.
2. Arrival and Conduct:
   • Candidates must arrive at the exam centre at least 30 minutes before the official start time. Late arrivals may be refused entry or allowed only at the examiner’s discretion.
   • Only essential materials, like pens, pencils, rulers, erasers, and other approved stationery, are permitted in the exam hall.
   • Examination officials, including supervisors and invigilators, must be on site before candidates arrive to properly prepare the hall and ensure smooth supervision.
3. Dress and Personal Preparations:
   • Candidates are advised not to wear socks or wristwatches into the exam hall to prevent hiding unauthorized materials.
   • Only school uniforms and permitted footwear, such as flat sandals without socks, are allowed, following GES and Ministry of Education guidelines.
4. Behaviour and Integrity:
   • Silence must be maintained throughout the exam; talking or helping others is strictly forbidden.
   • Impersonation, collusion, or seeking help from outsiders are serious misconducts that can result in results being withheld or cancelled.
   • Candidates must start writing only when instructed and stop immediately when the official stop signal is given.
5. Supervisory and Security Rules:
   • Only authorized examination officials, such as WAEC officers and GES staff, are allowed in the exam centre during BECE. Parents, school proprietors, and headteachers are generally not permitted inside.
   • Invigilators may search candidates before entry or during the exam if there is suspicion of prohibited materials.
   • These measures are supported by the Ministry of Education and the government, which aim to protect the examination’s integrity and maintain public confidence.
6. Government and WAEC Interest:
