Mr Alfred Sakyi has been elected the new Lay President of The Methodist Church Ghana at the Church’s 52nd Biennial Conference, held at St Paul Methodist Cathedral in Tema.
According to reports, Mr Sakyi secured 186 votes, representing 46.96% of the total votes cast. His closest contender, Madam Agatha Ennin Osei, received 79 votes, representing 19.94% of the total votes.
According to the Church’s Constitution, a candidate must secure more than 50% of the votes to be declared the outright winner of the election.
Following the concession by Sister Agatha Ennin Osei, together with a standing vote by delegates at the Conference, Bro. Alfred Sakyi was affirmed as the Lay President-elect of The Methodist Church Ghana.
The Lay President is one of the three leaders of the Church and is responsible for assisting the Presiding Bishop in the discharge of his duties and responsibilities.
Bro. Alfred Sakyi will succeed Bro. Kwesi Atta-Antwi, whose tenure as Lay President will come to an end. Bro. Sakyi’s tenure will officially take effect on October 1, 2026, and he will serve a three-year, non-renewable term.
In a brief remark following his affirmation, Bro. Sakyi pledged his steadfast support to the Presiding Bishop, the Most Rev. Prof. Johnson Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu. He also expressed his appreciation to the delegates for the confidence they had reposed in him by entrusting him with the highest lay leadership position in the Church.
