The Parliamentary Select Committee on Roads and Transport has paid an official visit to the Ministry of Transport and its agencies to perform its legislative oversight function and foster collaboration in Ghana’s transport sector.
The 17-member Committee, led by its Chairman, Hon. Isaac Adjei Mensah – who is also the Member of Parliament for the Wassa East Constituency in the Western Region – undertook the visit to receive updates on ongoing projects and foster direct dialogue with agencies under the Ministry’s purview. The Chairman described the visit as “a strategic and symbolic gesture,” emphasizing its importance as a direct engagement with sector leadership to enable informed legislative support going forward.
The other Members of the Committee present at the meeting were as follows: Hon. Chiwitey Dari Andrew, Vice Chairperson and MP for Sawla/Tuna/Kalba; Hon. Osei Nyarko Kennedy, MP for Akim Swedru and the Ranking Member; Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye, MP for Bantama; Hon. Frimpong Kwame Ohene, MP for Asante Akim North; Hon. Cudjoe Doyoe Comfort, MP for Ada; Hon. Marfo Ahenkorah Kofi, MP for Achiase; Hon. Mahama Toure Naser, MP for Ayawaso East; Hon. Ziedeng Anwataazumo Bede, MP for Lawra; and Hon. Mubarak Seid, MP for Sunyani East.
At the meeting, the Minister for Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, revealed several ongoing reforms. Among them is a framework to regularize commercial motorcycle operations, popularly known as “Okada,” which includes lowering the minimum rider age from 25 to 21. This reform is near completion and will soon be presented to Parliament for approval.
The Minister also highlighted other initiatives, including the revival of Ghana’s national carrier through a public-private partnership, the upgrading of airport infrastructure, studies on coastal routes to reduce road congestion, the opening of a new DVLA branch in Adenta, and improvements to the Ghana Civil Aviation Training Academy.
Additionally, he disclosed that the Ministry is working to secure new buses for Metro Mass Transit and the State Transport Corporation (STC).
