For thousands of years, human beings lived without electricity as we know it today. From ancient times through the 18th century, people had no electric lights in their homes, no refrigerators, no electric fans, no televisions, no computers, and certainly no mobile phones to charge. Life was very different from what we experience today.
Imagine being born into a world without electricity. Imagine coming home in the evening and having to depend on fire, candles, oil lamps, or other simple sources of light. Imagine trying to complete your work after sunset without a bright electric bulb. How would your daily life look?
For many people who lived before the development of modern electricity, this was simply normal life. They planned their activities around daylight because the sun was their most important source of light. When darkness came, their activities were greatly reduced. Families gathered around fires or used candles and oil lamps to provide some light, but these sources were not as bright, convenient, or safe as the electric lights we use today.
The story of electricity, however, did not begin with one person. It was the result of the work of many scientists and inventors over several centuries. Different people made discoveries that gradually helped humanity understand and control electricity.
One important achievement was made around 1800, when Italian scientist Alessandro Volta developed the voltaic pile, widely regarded as the first true battery. Volta’s invention was important because it provided a continuous source of electric current. This made it possible for scientists to carry out further experiments and learn more about electricity.
The development of electric lighting also took many years. Several scientists and inventors experimented with electric lamps during the 19th century. Therefore, it would not be historically accurate to say that Thomas Edison simply invented the light bulb from nothing.
Thomas Edison, however, played a very important role in making electric lighting more practical. In the late 1870s, Edison and his team worked extensively on improving the incandescent electric lamp. In 1879, Edison demonstrated a practical incandescent lamp that could burn for a much longer period than many earlier attempts. He also worked on developing a wider electrical lighting system that could generate and distribute electricity to homes and businesses.
This was a major step in the history of modern life.
As the years passed, other scientists, engineers, and inventors continued to improve electricity generation, transmission, wiring, electric lamps, appliances, and many other technologies. Electricity gradually moved from laboratories and experimental settings into factories, streets, businesses, schools, hospitals, and eventually homes.
The change was enormous.
Today, many of us switch on a light without giving it a second thought. We open a refrigerator to keep our food fresh. We charge our phones, watch television, use computers, operate fans and air conditioners, pump water, cook with electric appliances, and connect with people around the world using devices that depend on electricity.
But have we ever stopped to ask ourselves what life would be like if electricity suddenly disappeared?
What would happen to our homes at night? How would we preserve our food without refrigerators and freezers? How would we charge our mobile phones? How would hospitals operate many of their machines? How would schools, offices, banks, factories, communication systems, and transportation services function?
These questions help us appreciate how much the world has changed.
It is on this premise that Sir Joe brings you the “Time Changes” Series—a journey through some of the important changes that have taken place in human life over the years. The purpose of this series is to help us look back, understand where we came from, and appreciate the inventions and developments that have made modern life easier.
Sometimes, we become so used to modern technology that we forget that the things we consider normal today were once impossible, unavailable, or extremely difficult to access.
Electricity is a perfect example.
For generations, people went to bed when darkness made work difficult. Today, we can keep our homes brightly lit throughout the night. People once struggled to keep food fresh for long periods. Today, we simply put food in a refrigerator. Communication that once took days, weeks, or even months can now happen within seconds.
That is what “Time Changes” is all about: understanding how human life has moved from one stage to another.
The journey from darkness to electric light was long. It involved curiosity, experiments, failures, discoveries, and the determination of many people who believed that life could be better.
And that is the story we are beginning with.
