All exams prohibit cheating and BECE is not an exemption. A student caught in cheating in BECE has consequences. The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is a very important examination written by final-year Junior High School students. It helps determine whether students can progress to the next stage of their education, especially into Senior High Schools.
Because of the importance of the examination, strict rules are put in place by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and supported by the Ministry of Education in Ghana to ensure that the exams are conducted fairly and honestly.
When students engage in cheating or examination malpractice, it affects the credibility of the examination and disadvantages students who prepared well and worked hard. That is why serious penalties are given to candidates who are caught cheating during the BECE.
Below are some of the offences associated with cheating in BECE.
1. Bringing Foreign Materials into the Examination Hall
One of the most common offences is bringing unauthorized materials into the exam hall. These materials are often called foreign materials because they are not permitted in the examination room.
Examples include:
- Prepared notes or written answers
- Textbooks
- Printed materials
- Pieces of paper containing answers
- Electronic devices such as mobile phones
Even if the student does not use the material during the examination, just possessing it in the exam hall is considered an offence.
2. Copying from Another Candidate
Copying answers from another candidate during the examination is also considered cheating. Some students try to look at their colleagues’ answer sheets when they do not know the answers.
This practice is strictly prohibited because:
- It is dishonest.
- It gives unfair advantage.
- It disrupts the fairness of the examination.
Both the student who copies and the one who allows copying may face punishment.
3. Communication with Other Candidates
During the BECE examination, candidates are expected to work independently. Any form of communication between candidates can be interpreted as cheating.
This includes:
- Talking during the examination
- Passing notes to another candidate
- Signalling answers through gestures
- Sharing materials
Invigilators are trained to observe such behaviours, and any candidate caught communicating during the exam may be reported.
4. Impersonation
Impersonation is a serious offence where someone writes the examination on behalf of another candidate.
In such situations:
- The real candidate allows another person to sit for the exam.
- The impersonator pretends to be the registered student.
This offence is considered very serious and can lead to cancellation of results and further disciplinary actions.
5. Leakage of Examination Questions
Sometimes examination questions are illegally obtained before the exam begins. This is called question leakage.
Students who:
- Obtain leaked questions before the exam, or
- Share such questions with others
are also considered to have engaged in examination malpractice.
Authorities take this offence very seriously because it affects the integrity of the entire examination system.
6. Writing Answers on Unauthorized Surfaces
Some candidates attempt to write answers or formulas on places such as:
- Desks
- Handkerchiefs
- Clothing
- Hands or body parts
This is another form of cheating because the information is prepared before the examination to help the candidate answer questions.
Consequences of Cheating in BECE
Candidates caught cheating in the BECE may face several penalties from WAEC. Some of the common consequences include:
- Cancellation of the entire examination results
- Cancellation of the subject involved
- Withholding of results while investigations are conducted
- Disqualification from the examination
In some cases, schools and supervisors involved in malpractice may also face sanctions.
The BECE is meant to test a student’s true knowledge, preparation, and ability. Cheating may seem like a quick way to pass, but the consequences can affect a student’s academic future.
Students are therefore encouraged to study hard, follow examination rules, and maintain honesty during the examination. Success achieved through hard work is always more rewarding and respected.
Remember, passing the BECE with integrity is not only good for your academic record but also helps build a strong foundation for your future education.
