Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President of the Republic of Ghana and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2024 general elections, has expressed optimism about returning to power in 2028 – this time, as President.
In comments going rounds on various platforms, Dr. Bawumia reportedly shared an opinion that the political landscape in Ghana is shifting in a direction that favours his future prospects. According to circulating reports, he stated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will likely present a new candidate for the presidency after the 2024 elections. In his view, this development provides a significant opening for him in the 2028 elections.
Dr. Bawumia emphasized that winning an election as a first-time presidential candidate in Ghana’s Fourth Republic is historically unprecedented and extremely difficult. He pointed out that this precedent could pose a challenge to both himself and any new entrant from the NDC in the 2024 elections.
However, he believes that should he not emerge victorious in 2024, the experience gained and the evolving political conditions will position him strongly for a successful bid in 2028.
Dr. Bawumia’s remarks have sparked discussions among political observers and the general public. Could his analysis indeed pave the way for a historic return to power as Ghana’s vice president to ascend to the presidency after a failed first attempt?
