Sir Joe has openly confessed how he nearly ended his formal education after writing the BECE. He recalls starting school in the early 2000s, consistently performing at a high academic level from Basic 1 through to JHS 3. His dedication to studies was clear, and he often stood out among his peers.
However, in Basic 3, Sir Joe received a message that would weigh heavily on his young mind. He was advised to learn apprenticeship skills, specifically masonry, as a future career path. While the suggestion was well-intended, it motivated him even more to excel academically, especially as he approached the BECE. He poured his energy into his studies, determined to achieve excellent results.
Upon completing his BECE, he scored a commendable aggregate, a reflection of his hard work and dedication. Yet, despite this achievement, the message he had received years earlier still lingered. It seemed as though his path to further education was being blocked, and his late father insisted that he should not continue to senior high school. Sir Joe and his teachers, along with some elders, tried to convince his father to reconsider, highlighting his impressive BECE results, but their efforts proved unsuccessful.
The young student found himself in deep despair, watching as his peers, many of whom he had outperformed, continued their education. Every night, crying and prayers became his only refuge. He placed his hope entirely in God, seeking divine intervention to change his father’s mind and allow him to continue his studies.
Then, one faithful evening, the moment came. His father called him and instructed that he should prepare to go to school in the next two days. Overwhelmed with emotion, Sir Joe could not even speak; all he could do was to raise his eyes to the heavens in gratitude.
This turning point in his life marked the beginning of a journey that would shape his future.
The chronicles of what actually happened in Sir Joe’s educational journey will be revealed in the next episode…
